Jordyn Williams is a star student for this week. Williams has been in track and field, basketball, girls flag football, and very involved in after-school clubs. Some things that inspired Williams throughout her high school career have been the strength, creativity, and influence of African Americans.
“Representing my community through my work feels essential in spaces where our stories are often overlooked,” Williams said.
Williams is also very inspired and driven by the challenge of depicting human experiences in unique visual ways, as well as using elements of transformation and emotion to express what words sometimes can’t.
Some of Williams’ favorite accomplishments have been winning the Congressional Art Award. In Williams’ future, she plans to attend a four-year college, either VCU or SCAD, to pursue a career in medical illustration.
“Seeing my work displayed in the U.S. Capitol for a year was the first moment I truly understood the value and reach of my art,” Williams said
Another big accomplishment was receiving the YoungArts award, but not just for the recognition, but for the experience of traveling to Miami and connecting with a diverse and inspiring community of artists.
Recently, she has been the lead artist for Meural, which contributes to and expresses the Wake Forest community. Most of Williams’s inspiration came from Joyner Park, and it greatly inspired her to add the pathways and the trees.
