The Spanish Honors Society was founded by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese in 1953. The name of our school’s chapter is Chi Chi Rodriguez. The French Honors Society was founded in 1927, and the Latin Honors Society was founded in 1929 to help teachers reward advanced Latin students.
Thursday, March 5, was the day of our Language Honors Society Induction, and new students were brought into the society.
The induction was held in the 4600 lobby, where inductees said a pledge in their language to get their pin and certificate. Hannah Dribus described the induction as seamless, and 30 total students were inducted into the societies, 5 in French, 9 in Latin, and 16 in Spanish.
Most people, like sophomore Hannah Dribus and junior Ruth Berhanu, joined the society to look better on college applications and because they like the subject. Many students had been in language classes for multiple years, and this is a huge achievement for these students.
“I accepted the invitation because I really like Spanish, and it’s been a class I’ve taken for the past two years, and I really enjoyed it, and I felt like being in this society was kind of honoring all the work that I’ve done, like in the class,” said junior Leslie Bell.
All of our inductees worked very hard to get into the Language Honors Society, to get in, they must an A average grade after 3 semesters of studying the same language.
The event was very late in the year compared to other events, this allowed students who started a language in their junior year to be inducted in their senior year.
