Our school put on an amazing production of Something Rotten over the past two weeks. Something Rotten is a Shakespearean play about Nick Bottom, a playwright, who hates Shakespeare. The play was a fun and meaningful one, with lots of depth, and an amazing cast the portrayed their roles well.
We have an amazing collection of students with artistic abilities who participated in the play and made it come to life. They worked tirelessly, and as a result, have been nominated as finalists for DPAC Rising Stars in the following categories: Best Musical, Best Ensemble, Best Student Set Design, and two Actors in the top 10 best Actor category.
Plays are a team effort that needs everyone to put their all into their work. Junior Natalie Baker was a crucial part of the cast, playing Portia, a young girl who falls in love with Nigel Bottom. Baker’s portrayal of Portia was fun and emotional. Natalie’s ability to be an amazing actor and singer is not only because of her breathtaking talent, but also from the energy she gets from the rest of the cast.
¨This entire cast brings the energy; there is not a single person who isn’t trying their best, and I think everyone having that dedication makes performing together so fun! ¨ Baker said.
One of the biggest parts of being a good actor is being able to connect with your character and understand their emotions and thoughts, so you can in turn show the audience all the emotions the character is working through.
¨ I would try to connect the aspects of her to who I am, but mainly, I would go through every line and think about what my character is thinking and what the purpose of the scene is, so I could understand what she is feeling and why.¨ Baker said
Something Rotten is a funny and positively unhinged production, with many amusing lines and great songs like Junior Jasmyn Spencer’s favorite line, Oh no thou didn’t!, and her favorite song I Love the Way.
Our school and students did a great job putting together this play, and none of this could have been possible without our amazing crew. The teamwork of the cast and crew made the production possible and breathtaking.
