Some people hate it, some love it, but either way, the second semester is officially here. Students have a fresh set of classes to tackle and a calendar overflowing with major events, ranging from the Something Rotten musical to Prom and Graduation.
The festivities kick off tonight, Feb. 20, with the school talent show. Organized by theater teacher Daniel Cerullo, the event serves as a showcase for the diverse skills of our student body. Cerullo has already assembled a full team of judges, tech crew, and hosts to ensure the night runs smoothly. Beyond the school spirit and entertainment, there is a high-stakes incentive: a monetary prize for the winner.
“My hopes are to showcase the variety of talent we have here at Wake Forest High School,” Cerullo said. “Not just the performing arts students, but to showcase students who may be involved in other activities but want a chance to shine!”
Sports also pick up speed this semester, with seasons beginning for softball, lacrosse, and soccer. Our teams will soon hold tryouts and begin their competitive schedules, while many students look forward to both playing for and cheering on the Cougars.
The theater department is also deep in rehearsals for Something Rotten. The play follows playwrights Nick and Nigel Bottom in Elizabethan England as they attempt to outshine William Shakespeare by creating the world’s very first musical. According to Cerullo, the production is full of humor, and the theater classes have been practicing for a long time to bring the story to life. The play will run over two weekends: April 17 at 7:00 p.m., and April 18, 24, 25, and 26 at 2:00 p.m.
The dance department has its own major milestone approaching with the next recital, themed “Standing in the Sun.” The performance features modern choreography set to the music of Mumford & Sons, specifically focusing on the lyric, “Where you invest your love, you invest your life.” The concert will feature a wide array of dance and music, and is scheduled to take place on May 29 at 6:00 p.m. and May 30 at 1:00 p.m.
Prom is another prominent event occurring this semester. This year, the theme is Alice in Wonderland, meaning students might lean into the whimsical and the “Wacky” with their attire. Prom remains a vital part of the school experience and will take place on March 21 to bring the community together for a night of school spirit.
Students hold a wide range of opinions on the second semester. Freshmen Maria Montiel mentioned that she feels the second semester is a bit quieter than the first. On the opposite side, freshman Rhylen Tipps said he is enjoying the new term, though he is working hard to navigate the rigors of his AP coursework.
Finally, there is the “Big one.” Graduation will take place later this semester, and hundreds of students will leave our halls for good. Senior dues are being paid, and students are collecting the final credits they need to walk across the stage. This year, our school has a total of approximately 520 expected graduates.
Graduation and exams will continue to creep closer, but in the meantime, there is plenty to do. With so many events to look forward to, the next few months promise to be some of the most exciting of the year.
