Cougars Send Nine Swimmers to States

The regional championship was held Saturday, Feb. 1.

Congratulations to the swim team for their performance Saturday at regionals. The Cougars were led by sophomore regional champion, Tate Bacon who won the 100 freestyle (46.82) and finished second in the 50 freestyle (21.77).

Senior Gideon Bezuidenhout and freshman Clarissa Bezuidenhout both qualified for two individual events while freshman, Chrisna Bezuidenhout qualified for one. Gideon placed seventh in both the 200 IM (2:02.05) and the 100 breaststroke (1:01.73). Clarissa finished seventh in her 200 freestyle (1:58.30) and fourth in the 500 free (5:16.91) and Chrisna came in seventh place in the 100 backstroke (59.76). Swimmers who finish in the top eight of their event qualify for the state meet. 

The relay team of senior Melvin McLawhorn, Tate Bacon, sophmore David Quaresma and Gideon Bezuidenhout placed third in the 200 freestyle relay and finished with a time of 1:29.42. 

State qualifiers on the relay teams also included senior Kaila Park and junior Danielle Hirsch in the 200 freestyle (1:44.25), and Ben Walton in the 200 medley (1:40.57).

These are the results from the recent States competition.

The men’s 200 freestyle relay team finished in the top ten of their event at the state championship. With a time of 1:29.02, Melvin McLawhorn, Tate Bacon, Gideon Bezuidenhout, and David Quaresma brought home a tenth place finish for the cougars.

Sophomore swimmer Tate Bacon finished in second place in his 100 freestyle event (46.19) and third in the 50 freestyle (21.18).
