The Cougar medal is a tradition that was started last year by Athletic Director Mike Joyner and Assistant Athletic Director Geoff Belcher. The medal is given to a select few of athletes that have achieved above and beyond within their sport.

Senior Swim Captain Emma Isley received a Cougar Medal at the winter sports banquet. Isley was a regional qualifier in the 50 free style and all three relays.

“Swimming has played a big part in my life since I was 8 years old, and it meant a lot to receive that award my senior year,” Isley said.

To some athletes, there is a lot that goes into becoming great. Practicing isn’t just the key to getting to where an athlete wants to be. A lot comes from the people around them.

“I always had my coaches, teammates and family to encourage me to do better and become the best I can,” Isley said.

Other Cougar Medal recipients included Sophia Smyre, who was a regional qualifier in the 200 IM and 100 breast and two relays. Junior Sander Cypher, who was a regional champion in wrestling, two-time conference champion and two-time state qualifier and Senior Joshua Cathcart, who was a conference champion, regional placer and state qualifier for wrestling here also honored.

Lastly, senior Nick Mutio, who was the 2016 conference wrestler of the year, two time conference champion, two-time regional champion and four-time state qualifier also received a Cougar Medal.
