Senior Connor Cochrane looks on as his coach, Mike Atkinson, speaks before the Raleigh Sports Club. Cochrane was named the Athlete of the Week Sept. 16.

Senior soccer captain Connor Cochrane was honored Sept. 16 by the Raleigh Sports Club as its High School Athlete of the Week.

Each week the club honors a local athlete who exhibits a balance of athletic achievement, classroom acumen, and community service. Athletes must have a minimum 3.8 un-weighted GPA.

Cochrane joins other Cougars like Stanford University running back Bryce Love to be honored.

“It felt very good for my hard work to be acknowledged like that. They had honored athletes like Bryce Love and successful athletes like that, so it felt good to be a part of that group,”

The club, which originally began with 12 members, has grown to over 300 members. They meet weekly for lunch and hear from important people in N.C. and national athletics.

At the most recent meeting, club members heard John Swofford, the ACC commissioner, speak. Upcoming speakers include David Cutcliffe, Duke Football coach and Jeff Mullins Duke and Golden State Warriors basketball star.

During Cochrane’s meeting President of the Carolina Hurricanes Don Waddell spoke to the club.

Waddell spoke with Cochrane afterwards and shared how he had played in college. He said that being honored like this at a young age is a good achievement.
