Gymnastics is a sport at our school that many people may not know about. The team may be unknown, but they are already achieving great things. “There were only two kids on the team last year, which was increased to ten this year. The two girls from last year are long-time gymnasts, and they had to learn how to work with the beginners,” coach Jeremy Schmitt said.
With the team moving up in ranking, the season went over well for junior Marielle Curcio.
“I’m proud of everyone. It was really fun because we’ve never been able to place in team awards because there were never enough people,” Curcio said.
Gymnastics is in many ways an individual sport, but there are many aspects to it that still make it a team sport. The gymnastics team made second place in states in their division, and third place in the Cap-8.
“It was awesome for us to be so competitive. Next year we will win it.” Schmitt said.
With the change in amount of athletes, the team has to learn how to work together to succeed.
“We had to deal with a few injuries this year. Also, it was tough to balance out kids who wanted to learn for the first time with the ones who have been competing for a long time,” Schmitt said. “It was hard to let everyone compete that wanted to compete since we are limited to a certain number in competition.”
Winning second place in states was a big accomplishment for the team.
Junior Audrie-Emma Bruce said, “I did my best, the win was exciting, and it gives me more motivation to work harder and do better next year.”
