Senior Chelsey Cunningham was honored Oct. 7 by the Raleigh Sports Club as the High School Athlete of the Week.

The club honors a local athlete every week. They choose these honorees based not only on athletic achievement, but also on classroom accomplishments and community service. Each athlete chosen must maintain a minimum of a 3.8 un-weighted GPA.

Cunningham is the second athlete from Wake Forest this year to receive this honor, and she received it for the sports of volleyball and softball. The earlier recipient this year was senior Connor Cochrane.

“It felt good to be recognized by the school and the community for everything that student athletes have to do like going to games and balancing school work,” Cunningham said.

One aspect of each weekly luncheon is the variety of important people from N.C. and national athletic organizations that speak to those in attendance. For Cunningham’s luncheon, an NFL Referee was the guest speaker.

The goal of these speakers is to have someone pull away an important lesson or idea, and Cunningham definitely did.

Cunningham said, “Referees are humans too. They can make mistakes, they’re not perfect and even though they try to be, they can’t get everything right.”
