We all know that phones are a big distraction in the classroom, and now some teachers are banning phones in their classroom. They want the students to pay more attention to them rather than their phone.
There are now more classrooms that are phone free. You see this in some classrooms right when you walk in. You put your phone in a little pouch and get it back at the end of class. Most students do not like this, but it is better for their learning environment.
Another good thing about no phones in the classroom is students will talk to each other more. From class discussions about homework to making small talk to pass the time, when students don’t have their phone they build more relationships.
Many students are very uncomfortable with giving up their phones, which is a big problem if teachers want to have a free phone classroom. Phones allow students to be connected to their friends, family and social media. Staying connected with all those things can be a stress reliever, but it can also be very stressful when stuff on social media that you don’t like contributes to family or friend issues.
A phone break would be a good idea. Where you have your phone for ten minutes per class, and the rest of the class is phone free. This is a good way to have a strong concentration level in class, and the students are happy since they have their phone.
When teachers see the students lack concentration and tune out the lesson later in class, let them have their phone. Then after ten minutes have them put their phone away and get back to learning. This will create a productive learning environment.
Music is also a good way for students to get more locked in for their individual learning when they are doing assignments by themselves and need to concentrate. Calm music like jazz or music with no words and more soothing tones can really help people concentrate. But students need to be selective when choosing music to help them concentrate. Music with a lot of words and a loud and rapid beat can put some out of the concentration zone. Music is also a very good stress reliever.
The only time music is not good is when the teacher is actively teaching and students hear them talk.
Phones have been a problem in the classroom, but teachers and students can change it. If we create a good learning environment, the next generation can thrive when they grow older.
