Christopher Nolan has created great movies in the past such as The Dark Knight and Interstellar; however, his last movie is a must watch. Through the use of great acting and visuals, Oppenheimer beautifully shows the set of events surrounding the creation of the first nuclear bomb that occurred during 1945.
Not only does the movie manifest the stress and magnitude of the events, but it brings up tough subjects and questions that should be asked and talked about today.
Even with the outstanding acting performances of all the cast, Cillian Murphy’s portrayal of Oppenheimer stands out. Murphy, known for his work on Peaky Blinders and Inception, arguably took on his biggest challenge with playing Oppenheimer. Despite the importance of the role, he did a good job showing the psychological side of how someone probably felt whilst dealing with such a dire situation. His acting along with the visuals impressively give the viewer a possible glimpse into the mind of Oppenheimer.
Florence Pugh ,who also stars in Black Widow and Don’t Worry Darling, plays Oppenheimer’s lover, Jean Tatlock. Her character plays a pivotal role in revealing more of Oppenheimer’s emotional side. Without her, the audience can’t connect to Oppenheimer as much. Not only does Pugh’s acting give more insight on Oppenheimer’s emotions, but it adds more conflict to what is happening. This added conflict can feel like a lot, but it only furthers the connection between the viewer and Oppenheimer.
There are so many aspects that make Oppenheimer a good movie; however, it’s not perfect. The constant cuts to different points in time make the story harder to follow. Plus the movie was pretty long. Length isn’t a bad thing. However, I was taken out of the movie a few times because of it.
The small issues the movie may have are severely outweighed by everything good, especially the message. Today, because of Oppenheimer’s creation, we have the power to cause our own extinction. I think that the movie stresses and highlights this point very well.
After watching Oppenheimer, I would definitely suggest it to others. The story is so important and entertaining. I had a great time watching it in theaters and will most likely watch it again. I not only believe that it’s one of the best movies to come to theaters in the past few years, but it’s a movie that we can learn from.
