Senior Denver Massey is a finalist for the National Merit Scholarship Program, which rewards students with scholarships and recognition that score extremely well on their PSAT/NMSQT test.

Massey felt accomplished when he heard the news.

“I was very excited to be selected as a finalist. I worked hard preparing for the NMSQT and then for the application that followed, so this was a nice reward for it.”

Massey is looking ahead towards furthering his education.

“Whether the scholarship works out or not, I’ll most likely be going to UNC Chapel Hill. This scholarship wouldn’t affect my decision.” Massey said.

For students who would like to pursue a scholarship through the National Merit Program, Massey recommends preparing for the test early.

“My advice would be to make sure you practice for the test. There are resources online and some in student services. The test is the hard part, so coming prepared and doing your best would be the best thing to do,” Massey said. “The application that follows just requires a little bit of writing, and I’m sure that if you did well on the test then you’ll be fine doing the application.”

In addition to his acceptance at UNC Chapel Hill, Massey has also been accepted to Duke University and NC State. He intends to major in math or computer science next fall. Massey said he enjoys the logical problem solving aspects of both, and likes to solve puzzles as well.
