Wake Forest, NC – 11/18/19- The Wake Forest High School Athletic Booster Club in conjunction with Athletic Director Mike Joyner announces the 2019 class of the Wake Forest High School Athletic Hall of Fame. The organization honors the contributions of athletes, coaches and volunteers who were a part of Wake Forest’s rich history. “We are proud to announce our 2019 Hall of Fame class. Our committee feels these inductees comprise a well-rounded class that represents the history of our school,” Joyner said.
We are pleased to announce the following for induction:
State Championship Basketball Teams- 1971 and 1972 state championship basketball teams.
Wayne Wellborn- 1961 graduate who was a football standout and went on to star at Wake Forest College.
Fitzhugh Thompson- Served 27 years as head baseball coach winning numerous conference championships and having several eastern regional finals appearances. His 1977 team played for the state championship. Primary architect of the current baseball field at the school.
John Byrne- 1968 graduate who was two time all conference and all state selection in basketball. He was named an All-American by Coach and Athletic magazine in 1968. Went on to play at University of Southern Mississippi. He is currently the mayor of Fuquay-Varina.
Becky Holder- Longtime volleyball and basketball coach. After starring at Barton College (where she is a Hall of Famer) in basketball and volleyball, she coached and taught for 27 years. She was named the Wake County Coach of the Year in 1989 in basketball leading that team to an eastern regional final appearance.
Doug Kinsman- Longtime softball coach who coached teams to 12 straight conference titles and two state finals appearances. At one point his teams won 143 straight conference games.
Jenna Viscuse Hinton- 1991 graduate who won five varsity letters in volleyball, basketball, soccer and softball. Two-time All Conference performer in volleyball and the recipient of the 1991 Tommy Byrne Award, the schools most prestigious athletic honor. Hall of Famer at Barton College where she was the MVP and a three time all conference player. Served as head coach at Wake Forest High School for 7 years.
Mac Williamson- A 2008 graduate, he was rated the top pitching prospect in North Carolina his senior year. Starred at Wake Forest University and was the 112th selection in the 2012 Major League Baseball draft by the San Francisco Giants, who he currently plays for.
The Hall of Fame class will be officially inducted at a banquet at the school May 2.
