Helen Owens, the dedicated Child Development teacher, has been shaping young minds for over a decade. Her passion for teaching and love for children has made her class one of the most memorable for students, many of whom leave with newfound perspectives on childcare and development.
Owens’ teaching style is hands-on, allowing students to experience real-life scenarios. Jahzara Lathan, a senior who took the class, reflects on how these experiences made an impact on her
“The baby activity showed me how motherhood really is, with the diaper bag, bottles and diaper changes for three days straight,” Lathan said. Activities like this provide students with valuable insights into the responsibilities of childcare.
What makes Owens’ class stand out is how she relates the lessons to the real world. Jordan Edwards, a junior who has taken the class, appreciated this approach. “Mrs. Owens makes the subject engaging by letting us play games and think as if we were in real-life scenarios,” Edwards said.
Owens doesn’t just teach; she prepares her students for the future. Lathan noted that the most important lesson she learned was to always take deep breaths. This simple advice highlights Owens’ focus on patience and understanding, traits that are essential when working with children. Edwards added that the class taught her to be more patient and how to better understand children’s needs.
Owens has a lasting impact on her students, not just academically but personally. Her ability to connect with students, her patience and her dedication to teaching child development has earned her a place in the hearts of many.
